Description
This course will provide an introduction to communication theory. It will introduce the currently appropriate theories related to interpersonal and small group communication, rhetoric, organisational communication, media effects, critical analysis of media, film theory, and impacts of new communication technologies. The course will then address the style, language and content of modern media looking at traditional and contemporary approaches to analysis of media texts. Principles of semantics and semiology and their practical application in the media industry will be used. Other important topics will include language issues in Mauritius, textual and discourse analysis, and gender representation in the media.
