This module provides a sound background on the structure and function of DNA and RNA, DNA replication, transcription, translation and the genetic code, recombinant DNA and genetic engineering, vectors for gene cloning and expression, plasmids, viruses, genotype, phenotype and types of mutation, recombinant and genetic mapping, regulation of gene expression and human genetic disease.
The Advanced Bioinformatics component combines formal lectures with hands-on sessions in which students work to solve a series of higher-level problem sets covering common scenarios in the acquisition, validation, integration, analysis and visualisation of biological data. Complex applications applied to drug discovery, microarray technology and molecular modeling will be covered.
