The module will examine the history of the Indian Ocean in precolonial and colonial periods. It will examine briefly the expansion of trading networks, of the three main religions, the impact of European entry, the creation of diasporas and of 'cultural continuums' in the Indian Ocean region and the emergence of multicultural societies in the islands and littoral Indian Ocean.
