This module is intended to provide general statistical literacy that will enable journalists to enrich their
articles and news coverage with accurate presentation and interpretation of quantitative information.
Common misinterpretations will be discussed illustrated by real examples taken from the media. Students
will be taught how to liven up articles and news features with tabular and graphical data displays as well as
statistical reporting that is accessible to a wide audience. The approach will be very practical and emphasis
will be placed on “learning by doing”. Topics include: objectives of statistical analysis, types of statistical
data, computation and interpretation of summary measures (percentages, rates, ratios, averages, measures of
variation, indices), tabular and visual display of quantitative information, analysis of trends and fluctuations,
elementary forecasting methods and the study of relationships. Attention will be given to reporting in French
language. |
