This module offers an Introduction to English poetry, placed within a broad historical and cultural context. A diversity of poetic traditions, subdivided into The Later Middle Ages, Renaissance and the Restoration, Augustans and Romantics and Victorians, will be studied. Among topics which students may study are shifts in literary technique, ideas of society and the individual, magic and the supernatural, attitudes towards the language of poetry. Selected works by poets such as Chaucer, Spenser, Milton, Dryden, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Byron, Tennyson, Hardy and Barrett Browning will be the object of study in this module. |
