This module aims to provide students with historical and critical perspectives on an evolving aesthetic form central to English Studies. Focusing on works originally written in English, the module surveys selected novels in three broad chronological groupings: 18th century novels, 19th century realist novels and 20th century Modernist novels. The syllabus encourages students to consider some relevant theoretical questions on the nature of narrative and the role of the reader, together with critical writing on a variety of topics, ranging from mimesis to genre. Some of the authors under study include Defoe, Swift, Austen, Dickens, James and Woolf. |
