The module will examine the relationship between cultural heritage and contemporary political, economic and social situations. Students will have the opportunity to explore theoretical and intellectual issues on cultural heritage and to encourage discussion. It will draw on Mauritian as well international examples to examine how cultural heritage sites in the Third World are working especially in a world of increasing privatisation. Included will be topics such as legitimacy of historical claims, colonial heritage, contesting space in urban environments, heritage and plural politics. Module will be assessed by assignments and research papers.
