Students will examine key current international debates related to heritage studies. What is heritage? What
should be preserved? What should not? Should heritage tourism be encouragedencouraged?Impact of
politicisation and ethnicisation of heritage on intercultural relations. Importance of community based heritage.
Students will draw from local and regional examples to attempt to answer these questions. Issues of
representations of heritage in Museums, decision-making on problems of conservation and renovation, the
problems of funding and the future of the sites will also be examined.
