This module will expose students to the history of information and communication technologies with
emphasis on the old media / new media paradigms and the nature of technological revolutions. Innovative
media will be discussed with a focus on web 2.0 platforms (e.g. blogs, micro-blogs, wikis, podcasts,
social networks) and concepts (e.g. folksonomy, user generated content, open source, long tail,
participative democracy, freemium) as well as technologies associated with mobility (e.g. tablets,
smartphones, geo-location). The social and cultural implications of new media forms will be explored,
including what these mean for traditional media businesses as well as individual identities. Themes
covered will evolve according to latest trends. |
