This module will investigate the historical development of Mauritian politics and political institutions
from colonial times to the contemporary period. Major themes will include: early colonial administration,
the French revolutionary period, the politics of early British Mauritius, the Constitution of 1885, the
Action Libérale and the Retrocessionnist Movement, the rise of political consciousness among the
Indians/Indo-Mauritians, the Great Depression and mass politics, constitutional evolution from 1945 to
1968, post-independence politics, the emergence of new Left, ethnicity and gender, local and regional
government, evolution of the party system and constitutional changes since 1968.
