Description
This module addresses war, society and public history in Mauritius and the South-West Indian Ocean from the 17th to the 20th century. War and preparation for war were major defining activities in Mauritius and the south West Indian Ocean in the era of rival empires of trade. This thematic module will explore in depth the military history of Mauritius and the region during the colonial era and study its heritage both tangible and intangible. Emphasis will be laid on the impact of global and regional conflicts and preparation for war on the economic, social, political, institutional and infrastructural development of Mauritius and the region. It will also focus on the public images and uses of events in colonial military history, past and present, through civic celebrations, memorials and monuments.
