There is renewed interest in the Indian Ocean both academically and politically. This module will contribute
to an understanding of how the past has influenced contemporary society in the Indian Ocean world using an
interdisciplinary approach including history, anthropology, archaeology, and geography. It will study in
particular human migration across the Indian Ocean, the spread of religion and trade and the resulting
cosmopolitan societies that emerged over the centuries.
