There is renewed interest today in the Indian Ocean both academically and politically. There is a need to
understand the multiple changes transforming the Indian Ocean today and its place in the modern world.
This module focuses on the role of religion, politics, economics and diplomacy in shaping the modern
Indian Ocean world in the 20th and 21st centuries. Special attention will be paid to the islands of the
Indian Ocean to contribute to an understanding of their vulnerabilities which could affect their future.
