This module explains the evolution and working of international legal frameworks for securing women's
rights. It provides an analysis of the most important international human right instrument in the field of
gender: the CEDAW. Students will be able to better understand the jurisprudence of the CEDAW
Committee, including the most salient and recent developments in this area. Issues that will be discussed
are as follows: Gender-based violence; the critique of heteronormativity; rights of LGBTI persons and
conceptual implications; sexual rights; culture and citizenship; gendered protection in conflict,
peacekeeping and war; gender and neoliberal economies and political regimes.
