This module surveys and critically engages with the establishment, development and impact of
slavery and indenture system in Mauritius. This thematic module provides an understanding of the
forces that caused the phenomenon of slavery and indenture across the British colonies; of the
specificity of slavery and indenture in Mauritius compared to the Atlantic and of the legal framework
supporting slavery and indenture. It explores the rise and fall of Slave trade; Abolition and the PostEmancipation
era; the transition from one labor system to another; the decline and disappearance of
indentured servitude. It focuses also on the formation of slave communities, kinship networks and
various forms of resistance to slavery and actual slave revolts. It includes also underlying themes such
as gender and diseases, dispersal of various cultures, ideas, religious systems, foods, crops, and
ideologies and contributions to knowledge of plants, foods, crops, healing practices and music. It
examines finally the legacy of slavery and indenture system in contemporary Mauritius. This includes
issues of compensation, marginalization and findings and recommendations of the Truth and Justice
Commission. |
