Description
Definitions and principles of Sustainability. Importance of Sustainability. Aims and objectives. Components of Sustainability. Environmental, health, social and economic concerns. Sustainability at agrosystem level. Sustainability of emerging crop production systems: Protected cultivation, Soilless production systems, Substrate hydroponics, Aeroponics, Aquaponics and Nutrient Film Technique. Hydroponics waste management system. Green roof systems and sustainability. Classification and characteristics of the major livestock production systems of the main domestic animal species. Factors influencing livestock production systems such as cultural, social, economical and political frame. Sustainability of market and subsistence oriented systems. Impacts of different livestock farming systems on the environment and food quality and safety. Overall sustainability of the major animal production systems (e.g., conventional and organic animal production, integrated animal systems, small scale livestock systems) in supplying animal food.
