This module is intended to introduce students to a selection of canonical poems written by famous
poets. The selection, while not aiming to be comprehensive, seeks to give a historical overview of the
major tendencies in poetry. Taking a historical perspective, the first semester will introduce students
to poetry from the Medieval to the Romantic period, while the second semester will cover poetry from
the Victorian era to the 20th century. Some of the poets under study may include: Chaucer, Spenser,
Shakespeare, Donne, Milton, Coleridge, Tennyson, Barrett Browning, Hardy, T S Eliot, Philip Larkin,
Ted Hughes, Stevie Smith. |
