This module aims to introduce students to perspectives on a key generic aspect in the history of
English literature: fictional prose writing. From the birth of the genre to the Modernist Period, through
the Age of Sensibility and the Gothic, Romantic and Victorian periods, the module examines the
defining periods in English novel writing, focusing on novels authored by prominent English writers
from the 18th to the early 20th century. Students will be invited to reflect on the nature of fictional

emerges, as well as the role of the writer and reader in meaning-making.
