This module is intended to provide students with the research training skills. It is taught by both
History and Sociology staff. The theme will vary from year to year but will be based on Mauritius.
Students will gain skills relevant to historical study such as in document study, interpreting and
analyzing documents, quantitative methods, as well as gain understanding of the historical method.
They will be introduced to methodology relevant to the discipline of sociology such as social
Research, theory and research, research design, operationalisation and measurement, reliability and
validity. In addition students will receive training in preparing literature reviews, writing a research
proposal, qualitative and quantitative methods, ethical concerns, sampling, conducting focus group
discussions and interviews, observation, constructing questionnaires.
