Description
Role and importance of animal production systems (commercial and small scale) in agricultural enterprises: poultry, pigs, beef and dairy cattle, deer, sheep, goats and rabbit. Benefits and risks of various animal production systems. Constraints on production and efficiency of resource use. Environmental impacts of livestock production. Breed Characteristics of farm animals Fundamental stockmanship for managing farm animals: rationing; weighing and tagging; usage of preventive and diagnostic equipment; handling and restraining animals, animal’s environment; evaluation of body condition score; livestock performance records. Farm animal abnormal behaviour and welfare concepts (e.g., the five freedom). Animal housing Systems and evaluation.
