The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the deep historical forces that have shaped the
Asian continent in the modern era to 1950s. Focusing on India, China and Japan, it will explore Western
intrusion and Asian response, the impact of colonialism, internal rebellion and revolution, selfstrengthening
and modernization, the rise of nationalism and communism, internal politics, continuities
and discontinuities, regional and international conflicts.
