Focusing on the region of Southern Africa from the beginning of the 20th century on, this module
explores issues related to the social, economic and political transformation of South Africa, Zimbabwe
and Namibia in the 20th century. Guerrilla movements of South-Africa and Namibia will be considered,
but the primary focus of the module will be on Zimbabwe due to the richness of its literature. This module
will consider the roots of armed struggle in nationalist politics, the military backing and strategy of
guerrilla movements, life in guerrilla camps, the complex interaction of armed guerrillas and civilians, and
the legacies of violence. |
