This module is an introduction to the ways in which language(s) is/are used in various social
contexts. The module aims to make students aware of the rich ways in which language(s) and social
context(s) interact(s). It will equip them with the tools required to provide plausible and theoretically
sound explanations for these linguistic phenomena. Students will also be encouraged to use the
knowledge that they have acquired to study and analyse the relationship between languages, both
spoken and written and their corresponding context. Some of the topics that will be covered in this
module include the relationship between social identity and language use, linguistic diversity and
language contact.
