Description
This module is a survey of key thematics and debates in American Cultural History from the American Revolution to the 21st Century. We will read a selection of literary and non-literary texts across genres and disciplines that define, interrogate, and redefine the American nation. Topics will include: the American Revolution; slavery; the Civil War; race and ethnicity; the Civil Rights 14 ŠUniversity of Mauritius, 2017 Movement; the post-Civil Rights era; multiculturalism; post-racial/post-ethnic/post-nationalist debates. Readings will include works by authors such as Mark Twain, Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, Frederick Douglass, William Faulkner, Toni Morrison.
