Description
Introduction to typical animal production cycles (e.g. pig, dairy). Main characteristics of main breeds of food producing animals. Categories of farm animal production systems (Intensive, small scale). Functions of Animal production systems (food vs non-food production). Principles of sustainable animal production systems. Common measures for assessment of animal productivity. Factors affecting animal performance and productivity (e.g. feeds, disease, thermal environment, genetics, welfare). Trends and current issues related to production and consumption of animal products: meeting the needs of the local, regional and global market. Impact of animal production on the environment and public concerns. Introduction to Livestock Value Chain from primary production to consumer use. Fundamental skills of animal husbandry: rationing; handling, weighing and tagging; usage of preventive and diagnostic equipment; evaluation of body condition score; use and development of performance records. Elements of animal behaviour and welfare.
