This module focusses on the dynamics between geographical and imaginative spaces, and cultural,
social and political transformation under the post-colonial condition. In the light of Postcolonial
theory, students will read texts produced in the decades following official decolonisation in excolonies that grapple with the weight of traumatic colonial histories. In the second semester, students
will explore the impact of colonialism in ex-settler colonies and colonial metropolises, where shared
spaces blur the demarcation lines between migrant and native, European and non-European, and past
and present to produce highly and often problematic hybridised spaces. Topics covered include:
power, politics and resistance; diaspora, the (home) land and exile; and identity-formation. |
