Description
This module will discuss representations of the 'other' in Western canonical literature and art with
respect to the essentialisation of racial and or religious differences. Theories of alterity such as Said's
orientalism will ground these discussions. It will also explore the complex, fragmented and hybrid
experiences of racial and/or religious selves in minority contexts in contemporary literature and
popular culture.
