This advanced level course in sociolinguistics aims to build on the knowledge and skills acquired in
the Year 2 core linguistics module by focusing, in more depth, on the social correlates of language
variation and change. The first part of this module will explore the patterns of co-variation between
linguistic forms and social variables such as age and ethnicity.
In the second part of this module, students will be encouraged to explore the relationship between the
macro-societal and micro-interactional levels by focusing on topics such as mobility, language
endangerment and language attrition.
