This module aims to explore the various types of narratives which have thrived around the Indian
Ocean. The historical, political and geographical complexity of this area of the world provides
interesting frameworks to analyse different genres, such as travel narratives, literary and historical
fiction, autobiographies, as well as pirate tales and fantasy fiction. Geo-locality and regional literary
traditions can also be addressed through the specific literary traditions of the many countries in and
around the Indian Ocean.
