Description
Productivity and yield assessment in crop enterprises. Orchard and garden management strategies. Greenhouse operations and management. Production management in plant nurseries. Packinghouse facilities. Cool chain maintenance and management in fresh produce supply chain. Resource management in crop processing enterprises. Consumer issues and consumption patterns in the fresh produce industry. Management of gardens and landscapes. Case Studies and Field Courses: Landscape design enterprises and import/ export crop enterprises. Problem-solving techniques in crop production management. Advanced food and crop technologies. Current issues (e.g role of livestock in achieving the SDGs, Greenhouse gas emissions, alternatives sources of meat- cell cultured meat) related to production and consumption of animal products. Emerging animal production systems (e.g. free range, animal welfare friendly systems, climate smart production systems) in supplying animal food. Production cycle and management of the main livestock species (poultry, pig, dairy, beef) for biological and economic sustainability. Indices for assessment of efficiency of production. Global GAP and MauriGAP. Application to relevant examples and case studies. Food laws and standards. Food safety management systems (HACCP, ISO 22000). Quality assurance schemes in the food industry (e.g ISO 9001, GMP). Environmental management system standards (ISO 14000). Food safety from farm to fork. Food system resilience, food security and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
