Anatomy of the abdominal cavity, viscera and reflection of the peritoneum, including a brief overview of G.I development. The structure and function of various parts of the gastrointestinal tract will be considered. Exocrine secretions of the pancreas and liver and the function of the gall bladder is important as in bilirubin metabolism (see also Blood). The students will need to understand how digestion and absorption occur and how they are controlled and also understand how substances are moved from one part of the G.I tract to another. An understanding of the pathophysiology which affects the gut, liver and pancreas (e.g. ulceration, cirrhosis, jaundice) will be required. Drugs which alter G.I function and secretion, will also be considered. |
